Studies
- A 2019 report by the Mississippi Forestry Association identified opportunities to produce over $2 billion annually in added forest products by utilizing more wood residues and low-valued timber for wood pellets, biochar, and biopower.
- A study published in the Journal of Forestry in 2020 examined the competitive conditions for solid wood products manufacturing in Mississippi. It found promising conditions for growth in secondary processing into finished and engineered wood products.
- Mississippi State University has published several studies, including an analysis in 2021 determining that Mississippi has 3-5 million dry tons of biomass available each year for renewable energy and bioproducts after accounting for sustainability issues.
- A 2022 strategic analysis sponsored by the Mississippi Development Authority identified priority targets for wood products manufacturing growth. These included wood pellets, OSB board, laminated veneer lumber and other engineered lumber categories.
- Market studies by timber industry groups have identified fast growing export demand for Mississippi-sourced forest products like wood pellets in Europe and Asia. This supports further investment into manufacturing capacity.
